Its population was 50,702 at the U.S. Census Bureau's 2000 census, and 64,669 at the 2010 Census. The town derives its name from the prominent 12.5-acre (51,000 m²) mound located in the southern portion of the town. Named for the profusion of wild flowers that cover its slopes, it is owned by the Mound Foundation, a non-profit organization representing the citizens of Flower Mound. Though surrounded by commercial and residential development, the mound is protected from further development.
Flower Mound has a suburban mid-size city atmosphere with easy access to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
