Short Description
Deltona (/dɛlˈtoʊnə/) is a city in the central region of the U.S. state of Florida, on the northern shores of Lake Monroe along the St. Johns River. It is the largest city in Volusia County, which is coextensive with the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the second-largest city in the Greater Orlando metropolitan area, with a population of 85,182 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.

The city was founded in 1962 as a retirement community, with a population of nearly 4,000. It would undergo a major housing boom during the 1980s and 1990s, gaining over 47,000 new residents since its founding, rapidly transitioning from a retirement community to a city oriented for all ages. As the city's land use is almost entirely residential, and over 75 percent is built upon it, Deltona primarily functions as a commuter town, and depends on surrounding communities for employment, shopping and entertainment.

The city is home to the Lyonia Preserve Environmental Center, a 360-acre project established to restore and maintain Florida scrub habitat. The Lyonia Preserve serves as the home to a growing population of gopher tortoises and the endangered Florida Scrub Jay.
